Saltus Grammar School won the Bermuda School Sports Federation middle school athletics competition for the second year in a row.

Despite finishing second in both the girls and boys overall standings, Saltus racked up 587.5 points to finish clear of Whitney Institute, who scored 554.5 points. Warwick Academy finished a distant third with 316.

Bermuda High School won the girls competition by the slimmest margin after finishing on 280 points, just half a point ahead of Saltus. The Whitney Institute finished third on 196.5 points. The Whitney Bulls led the charge in the boys division with 358 points ahead of Saltus on 308 and Warwick Academy with 195.

The top performer on the day was again Zydon Lightbourne-Furbert, who broke two of his own records in the over-13 boys event.

The Warwick Academy athlete has now broken five records in the last two years, beating his 200 metres record by one hundredth of a second when crossing the line in 22.53 seconds and shaving four hundredths off his 400 metres record when stopping the clock at 52.71sec in the final.

Sukanya Jobson, from Saltus, was named the champion girl in the under-12 girls division after winning gold in the 400, 800 and 1,500 metres. Jobson’s schoolmate Leydi Raynor finished second after winning the 100 metres and long jump and finishing runner-up to Alae Rochester, from Sandys Secondary, in the 200 metres. Rochester claimed silver medals in the 100 and 400 metres behind Raynor and Jobson respectively.

Hasim Ming was named under-12 boys champion after claiming a rare double in the 800 metres and turbo javelin. The Whitney student broke the javelin record last week before claiming the 800 metres gold and silver in the 1,500 metres in the finals on Tuesday.

Adam Barritt finished second after winning both legs of the sprint double and finishing fourth in the turbo javelin. The Whitney pair of Paz Lightbourne-Francis and A’Daj O’Brien also scored more than 20 points, with Lightbourne-Francis winning the 400 metres and finishing third in the 100 and 200 metres. O’Brien won the shot put, finished second in the 100 and seventh in the turbo javelin. Mount Saint Agnes’s Xander Romeo won the discus and finished second in the shot put and sixth in the turbo javelin.

Zakhya Scott, of Sandys Secondary, brought up a sprint trifecta to be named under-13 girls champion after winning the 100, 200 and 400 metres.

Amaya Davis, from Saltus, finished behind Scott on 23 points after winning the long jump and finishing second in the 100 and fourth in the 200. Avery Taylor, from BHS, won two silvers in the 400 and 800 metres and finished third in the 1,500 metres.

Whitney Institute’s Riana Robinson was a double winner after coming out on top in the 800 and 1,500 metre events.

Ryley Martin won the under-13 boys division with double gold in the 200 and 400 metres. He was denied a third gold by school mate Chanz Martin, who pipped him at the line in the 100 metres. Chanz Martin also finished runner-up to Riley Martin the 200. Timothy Pearman accumulated 23 points for Whitney after winning the 800, finishing second in the 400 and fourth in the 1,500.

Sprinters continued to dominate in the over-13 girls division, in which Whitney’s Zyari Lawrence was named champion.

Lawrence outran all her rivals in the 200 and 400 metres and finished second in the 100 to Milan Gibbons-Thomas, from BHS, who also won the triple jump and finished third in the long jump.

Saltus’s Kenzie Lawrence had a good day on the runway by winning the long jump and finishing second in the high jump and triple jump, while Somersfield Academy’s Gabriella Cechini came out on top in the 800 and 1,500 metres. Whitney’s Miyari Trott won the high jump and finished third in the 200 and 400 metres.

The title of over-13 boys champion was shared by Lightbourne-Furbert and Saltus’s Jordan Williams, who won all three jumping events.

Lightbourne-Furbert followed up his two record-breaking performances with a third win in the 100 metres. Whitney’s Zhyon Samuels finished second in the 200 and high jump and third in the 100.
