Repair work has been carried out on Goose Gosling Field to damage done by Hurricane Humberto, enabling the ground to host their first matches of the season this weekend.

The Bermuda Football Association confirmed yesterday that the ground, one of the busiest grounds during the season as one of only two venues with lights for night matches, will host a Premier Division match between Boulevard and PHC, the defending league champions.

Michael McGrath, the BAA president, explained earlier this week that damage had been done to the synthetic surface by a set of bleachers that blew onto the pitch during the hurricane.

He had hoped repairs would be carried out in time to host matches, after Wednesday’s Dudley Eve Trophy double-header was called off because of the possible threat of storm Jerry.

Those final group matches have not been rescheduled, though there is a month before the scheduled semi-finals take place on October 30.

Yesterday, the BFA announced that tomorrow’s league encounter would go ahead, starting at 9pm.

PHC were one of the winners in last weekend’s opening round of league matches.

However, they were forced to do it the hard way, having to come from behind to beat Somerset who took the lead midway through the first half when captain Leo Burgess scored on a breakaway.

Tre Ming, the Bermuda midfielder, denied the Trojans even a share of the points when he netted twice in the 3-2 win.

Boulevard are still without a win after 2-0 losses in the Dudley Eve Trophy and league to Devonshire Cougars.

Southampton Rangers were the big winners last weekend, beating X-Roads 5-0 on their return to the top flight.

Somerset Eagles also marked their return with a 1-0 win over Dandy Town which, based on Town’s 6-0 and 7-0 wins over X-Roads and Dandy Town in the Dudley Eve Trophy, is one of the biggest shocks so far.

Rangers host Devonshire Cougars at Southampton Oval tomorrow while Eagles make the long journey east to meet X-Roads at Garrison Field.

North Village will be hopeful of beginning their season in the perfect fashion with a win over Dandy Town in an eagerly anticipated encounter at Bernard Park.

Village, the last of the Premier Division teams to see action this season, were the busiest during the transfer period, picking up 16 players after coach Kenny Thompson’s return to the club as football director was confirmed in April.

Keishen Bean, a former captain, goes back to the Rams after one season at BAA where he netted 19 goals last season to help them finish sixth in the league. Bean is one of twelve players heading to Village from BAA who have now withdrawn from the league.

In tomorrow’s other match Robin Hood, another team expected to be in the running for silverware, take on Somerset Trojans at Goose Gosling Field.

The First Division looks to be a wide-open battle for the two promotion spots, with Devonshire Colts, despite losing six players during the transfer period, sending out an early warning with a 6-2 thrashing of Wolves.

St David’s won the other match played last weekend, 2-0 over Young Men’s Social Club.

Colts take on Vasco tomorrow while St George’s, who finished a distant third to Rangers and Eagles in the promotion race last year, begin their campaign at home to neighbours St David’s.

That match was switched from St David’s.

Hamilton Parish take on Flanagan’s Onions at Wellington Oval while Ireland Rangers meet Wolves at Malabar Field.
