An opposition MP apologised to the House of Assembly today after he was ejected during the last sitting.

Scott Pearman, a One Bermuda Alliance member, was removed from the chamber after his remark earlier this month.

During a debate on establishing a joint select committee to look into a cyberattack that crippled government services, Mr Pearman, the Shadow Minister of Home Affairs, questioned why legislation tightening cybersecurity was tabled before a joint select committee was established.

Derrick Burgess, the Deputy Speaker of the House who chaired the debate, replied that legislation could always be amended.

Mr Pearman responded: “Mr Acting Speaker, with respect, if you’re going to join the debate, your seat is over there.”

That remark prompted Mr Burgess to call on the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove Mr Pearman from the chamber. The remaining opposition MPs followed in solidarity.

Mr Pearman said yesterday: “Mr Speaker, I wish to offer you, as Speaker of this honourable House, an apology for my remark made on the last sitting of the House.

“This happened in the context which lowered the decorum of the House and I apologise for it.”
