Driver training will bring disruptions to bus services

Training day: bus services will face disruption for driver training (File photograph)

Bus services will be disrupted this week to allow about 80 drivers to undergo training on a new digital fare system.

As a result, the regular schedule has been revised from tomorrow through to Thursday, May 23.

Wayne Furbert, the Minister of Transport, said the “groundbreaking evolution” in the service is expected to be introduced on buses and ferries next month.

From June 24, phase one of the new system will allow passengers to buy tickets using their mobile phones through an app.

Once purchased, they can board buses or ferries by displaying their digital ticket to the operators, who will be able to determine the type of fare purchased by the signal on the passenger’s screen, whether it is the type of zone purchased or an adult or child fare.

Mr Furbert added: “As the transition to digital fare media is a phased approach, we will gradually introduce new features and services. This means that the option of purchasing and using the traditional fare will remain in place throughout the phases, ensuring a smooth transition for all passengers.

“The introduction of digital fare media is a significant step forward in our journey towards modernisation and efficiency. This transformative initiative is designed to cater to the needs of both our local population and visitors, promising a seamless travel experience.”

Adjustments to Monday and Tuesday’s schedule have been posted on the Government’s bus alert list at forms.gov.bm.

Adjustments to Wednesday and Thursday’s schedule will be posted will be posted after 5pm on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Transport said: “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and deeply appreciate your patience and understanding as we conduct training and prepare for the transition to the new digital services.

“We value your co-operation and understanding during this transition. As a reminder, throughout the phased-in digital fare media, tickets and passes can still be purchased at the Hamilton bus station kiosk, ferry terminal, and post offices.”
