Skincare specialist launches academy

Improving standards: Sasha Benson of Benson Esthetics has launched Benson Esthetics The Academy, at the top of Spurling Hill, to help licensed nurses or aestheticians with a level three or four beauty qualification, after witnessing substandard work (Photograph Jessie Moniz Hardy)

A Bermudian aesthetician has seen such a rise in demand for local skincare professionals, she is starting her own school.

Sasha Benson, of Benson Esthetics, has launched Benson Esthetics The Academy.

“The industry is such a huge industry,” Ms Benson said. “More and more people are becoming aware of skin irregularities, such as skin tags. They know they don’t have to live with them any more. They can get treated.”

Her clinic, at the top of Spurling Hill across from the Cavendish parking lot in Hamilton, is so busy she cannot do it all. She recently hired one staff member and is hiring two more.

“It is such a specialised field, it is hard to get someone who has the basic level of training,” she said.

Most of the applications she saw come through were for professionals trained to a level three beauty certification.

Her new academy is open to licensed nurses or aestheticians with a level three or four beauty qualification. Her one or two-day classes on topics such as dermaplaning, will raise professional standards.

“Most of the applications we have received are from people with a level three beauty qualification,” she said.

Her focus will be training aestheticians and nurses to become valuable employees, independent contractors, or new business owners in the beauty industry.

“These programmes are also available to spa owners and doctors who wish to invest in their team’s education and enhance their treatment menu,” Ms Benson said.

She has witnessed the aftermath of individuals seeking skincare services from inadequately trained providers.

“The result is damage and permanent scarring,” she said. “Some doctors’ offices even suggest their staff seek additional education from YouTube and TikTok, which, while convenient, may not provide the necessary expertise for premium services.”

Her courses offer hands-on training with live demonstrations, and upon completion, students will receive a certificate.

Additionally, skin professionals and nurses can purchase equipment, skincare products, and supplies directly from Benson Esthetics without added shipping fees.

“These programmes are also open to skin professionals in the United States and United Kingdom, allowing residents who complete courses to perform advanced skin treatments worldwide,” she said.
