The Governor, Rena Lalgie, said yesterday that officials in Bermuda were working with Britain and other Overseas Territories to address recent bomb threats.

Ms Lalgie highlighted that a series of hoax bomb threats were received by OTs, including Bermuda, in recent weeks.

She said: “As the internal security of Bermuda, and consequently aviation security, are constitutional responsibilities of the Governor, my office is working with the full range of Bermudian authorities and institutions to review our response and ensure that lessons learnt are properly and rapidly applied.

“We are being supported by UK experts in law enforcement and airport security to further upskill relevant officials on bomb threat assessment processes, and to ensure that the high standards of security required of our critical national infrastructure are maintained and improved.”

Ms Lalgie added: “Separately, a concerted effort by law enforcement agencies in Bermuda, other overseas territories, the UK and the USA, to trace and stop the source of these hoaxes, is under way.

“I would like to reassure all who live in and visit Bermuda that your safety and security is our primary concern.”

At about 9pm on May 5, LF Wade International Airport received a bomb threat via e-mail that said the airport and British Airways Flight 158 to London Heathrow were targeted.

The threat prompted an evacuation of the terminal, with the aircraft sent to a remote site for safety.

It came within hours, days or weeks of bomb threats made in the British Virgin Islands, the Turks & Caicos Islands, the Cayman Islands, Tortola and Anguilla.

On May 3, TC Weekly News reported on “a series of bomb threats” at the JAGS McCartney and Howard Hamilton International airports over the previous week which was under investigation by the Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force and its regional and international partners.

On May 5, Virgin Islands News Online reported that Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport was temporarily closed owing to a bomb threat that day.

The outlet further reported that it could confirm similar threats were made to airports in Anguilla and the Cayman Islands.

The Cayman Marl Road reported there were further threats made in Tortola and Anguilla on May 5 and 6.
