Ferry Reach will be buzzing with activity once again when the Bermuda Power Boat Association stage their season opening races on Sunday featuring teams competing in five classes.

Association commodore Janae Nesbitt is excited to get the new campaign off and running and is looking forward to what promises to be some exciting racing as teams will all be keen to lay down a marker first time out on the water.

“We are looking to have a good turnout and keeping our fingers crossed that we have some great racing weather,” she told The Royal Gazette.

Back to defend their titles are last year’s A class champions Shane Madeiros, Erin Butterfield and Josh Holder, BV class winners Brandon DeSilva and Blake Burgess, B class champion Howard Ascento, joint C class winners Lee Wilson and Chad Sutherland and Quince Dowling and Tai Bean, and D class champions Steven Meireles and Ryan Resendes.

“We hope we see every one of these guys out on Sunday to defend their title because we all know it's not always the fastest boat that walks away with the title, but it's always the most consistent boat,” Nisbett added.

Mariners have been advised to exercise extreme caution within the vicinity of Ferry Reach where teams will be racing at high speeds when racing gets under way at 2pm.

“I cannot stress any further that all boaters on the water on Sunday and in the vicinity of Ferry Reach, please be vigilant,” Nisbett said.

“Race boats will be travelling at high rates of speed and we ask that you please be safe and keep a look out.”

While actual racing starts on Sunday, the association will officially kick off the new season with an orientation for junior competitors at Ferry Reach tomorrow.

“The morning programme will include introductions getting to know the boat and water safety,” Nisbett said.
