Bristol City striker Nahki Wells is hoping to have a bigger impact next season as he attempts to extend his stay beyond his present contract at Ashton Gate.

The former Bermuda captain initially joined the Sky Bet Championship side in January 2020 for a fee believed to be about £5 million, which was extended for another two years in December 2022 until June 2025.

City, who finished eleventh in the Championship, recently announced Wells in their list of retained players for the upcoming 2024-25 campaign.

“They have announced the retained list, which is everyone that has another contract beyond this season and I am obviously one of those, so I am contracted for next season and looking forward to it,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

Even though he is one of the most senior players in manager Liam Manning’s squad at the age of 33, Wells believes he still has much to offer his team.

“I still have a huge and influential part to play and I’m still an important figure in the side,” he said.

“I had very positive conversations with the manager at the end of the season about my role and what I have to offer and I am just looking to rejuvenate, refresh, come back and look to have a better season than the last one.

“That's my perspective and I will take it one day at time and enjoy the moment. We will see how things go and hopefully it can be another really big season from myself and I can extend my stay even longer.”

Wells did not enjoy the best of seasons during the last campaign, which featured a two-month spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury and being in and out of City’s starting line-up.

However, he made a huge impact in the latter stages of the season coming off the bench to notch three goals, including a brace in City’s 5-0 win over Bristol Rovers, and become only the seventh player to score 100 goals in the Championship.

“To carve myself in the history books in that regard is an amazing achievement,” said Wells, who bagged eight goals in all competitions last season.

“It was a very proud moment and I’m very delighted.”
