Marine and ports department highlights kayaking events
Boaters were warned to be mindful of kayaking events scheduled to take place this weekend.
Kayak for Kids — a fundraiser for Scars — will start at Somerset Long Bay at about 8am on Saturday. Participants will paddle along North Shore or South Shore to Clearwater Beach in St George’s.
The Department of Marine and Ports said that the route will depend on wind and wave conditions on the day.
Participants will then paddle from Clearwater Beach back to Somerset Long Bay on Sunday, ideally in the opposite direction of the previous day’s route to circumvent the entire island.
Support boats, including from the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard, and jet skis will accompany the kayakers throughout the event.
A second event will take place on Sunday, when kayakers will leave the Royal Hamilton Dinghy Club at 1pm and paddle to the south and west of Nelly Island.
Paddlers will then move through Paradise Lakes, keeping Hinson’s Island to the north, and return to the dinghy club.
The event should be finished by 4pm. Support boats will also be present.
