Gibbs Hill Lighthouse repairs stalled by crane breakdown

Long-term repairs to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse are expected to be completed “by 2025”, the Government said.

The Ministry of Public Works explained that a crane, which can perform works at the Southampton landmark, was out of action.

In February, the Department of Marine and Ports said it was carrying out repairs at the lighthouse to fix a mechanical malfunction in its engine.

It was working to fix a problem on the electrical gearbox motor after the light at the facility ceased rotating.

The public works ministry said this week: “The Gibbs Hill Lighthouse motor has been restored, but the roof needs repair before the light can be installed.

“The Ministry of Public Works has the work in hand to seal several openings to the roof above the light.

“This work is dependent on the use of the only crane on the island that can reach this height, which, unfortunately, is out of service waiting for parts.

“A permanent repair is expected by 2025. In the meantime, a temporary repair to the interior has been initiated to seal these openings above the light.”

The ministry added: “Once the repairs to the crane have been completed, an estimated date for the completion of the roof repairs to the lighthouse will be forthcoming.

“The interior of the lighthouse has been recently painted, and the lighthouse is currently open to the public.”
