Nadhira Durham defeated Jess Charles to pick up her maiden women’s singles title in the Deloitte Open Tennis Tournament at Pomander Gate Tennis & Pickleball Club on Thursday.

Durham triumphed 6-2, 6-2 to be crowned the women’s champion. The 16-year-old stated that she relished playing in the title decider.

“I really enjoyed playing in the final, it was fun playing in the final and my opponent Jess played really well,’’ Durham said.

“I was working on being consistent with my serves and returns, and overall I had a great match.”

Only three women took part in the A section of the women’s singles, with Alexcie Burrows the other participant.

The trio engaged in a round-robin, which saw them qualify for the final.

Last year’s winner, Shelby Madeiros, decided to skip the singles, with the 21-year-old, who just concluded her studies at Siena College in New York, only deciding to play in the doubles, where Durham will be her playing partner.

“It was good playing in the women’s singles, I enjoyed both matches,’’ the winner said. “It would have been really nice if we had more women playing.”

The 27-year-old Charles conceded that Durham was a better player who was a worthy champion.

“It’s been a great week of tennis, Nadhira was a better player in the final and deserved to win,’’ Charles said.

“In spite of that, I enjoyed the match and I look forward to many more battles in the future.”
