The island’s fathers and national heroes are to be celebrated in an evening of creative expression this weekend.

The Chewstick Foundation announced that a special Carnival Edition of its open-mike session was to take place on Father’s Day on Sunday.

It is inviting members of the public to share songs, poems, stories and any other form of performing art in honour of the significant role that fathers and heroes play in the community.

A spokeswoman for Chewstick said: “The event will mark the return to Bermuda of Chewstick Foundation co-founder Najib Chentouf, better known by his performance persona, DJ Tan-Z, as event host.

“It will feature special guest performances by Bermuda’s international ‘Caribbean fusion’ star Ponaflex, as well as up and coming local reggae sensation Keneh Wopewet.

“Ponaflex and Keneh Wopewet, though not directly connected, both share a historical connection as both artists had their first major performances at Chewstick’s Beachfest emancipation celebration.

“A young Ponaflex originally performed as part of Boston-based hip-hop group Smash Mechanix, becoming one of the first international acts to ever perform at Chewstick’s Beachfest.

“A young Keneh Wopewet performed as part of Bermuda Squad, a regular at Beachfest, and who, in turn, got their start at Chewstick’s iconic original home on Court Street.”

Chewstick has not had a dedicated location since the tragic fire that destroyed its last location on Front Street in 2016.

The group has since returned to its “nomadic roots” and settled into a long-term residency at Blue Waters Anglers Club in Pembroke.

The spokeswoman added: “The support and generosity of the club has enabled Chewstick to host its Open-Mike Jam Sessions on the last Sunday of each month since 2022.”

She said that the monthly event was rescheduled this month to “unofficially coincide” with Bermuda Heroes Weekend events.

The spokeswoman added: “Guests are encouraged to lean into the theme and come dressed in your carnival costume, or as your favourite hero, or perhaps pick out something from a selection of turn-up gear they will have available on site.

“This event offers an enriching cultural experience, celebrating the stories, traditions and vibes that make Bermuda’s diverse community so special. And with the holiday being on Monday, this may be the perfect time to check out the magic of Chewstick, and witness the fruits of long-term investment in Bermuda’s vibrant culture.”

• The event will be held at the Blue Waters Anglers Club on Sunday. Doors open at 7pm, and the show runs from 8pm to 12am. Tickets are $10 and available at the door although entry is free before 8pm. Anyone wishing to perform should arrive early to register
