The Bermuda Road Safety Council has urged everyone to be alert on the island’s roads.

The council said: “By staying alert and focused on the road today, we can prevent accidents, save lives and ensure a safer tomorrow for our communities.”

The council likened driving while fatigued or drowsy to driving under the influence of alcohol, saying it undermined attentiveness.

“The danger of driving fatigued and not being alert is understated.”

This warning is echoed in the Transport Control Department’s traffic code handbook, which states: “Before using the road, be sure that your alertness or sense of caution is not affected by alcohol or fatigue.”

The BRSC also encouraged motorists to avoid using mobile phones while driving, follow traffic rules and signs, be aware of their surroundings, use safety gear, practise defensive driving, adapt to road conditions and drive sober.

It added: “By embracing the theme ‘Alert today, alive tomorrow’ [in June], we can collectively make a difference.

“Let us all commit to being vigilant, responsible and considerate road users, ensuring that everyone reaches their destination safely.”
