Robin Selley up for Archery World Cup Stage 3 challenge
Robin Selley is determined to put her best foot forward on her debut at the Antalya Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Turkey.
The Bermuda High School student will fly the Bermuda’s flag competing in the women’s recurve competition, where she hopes to achieve her goal and reap reward for the all of the work and sacrifices made preparing for her first appearance at the event.
“I am very, very excited for it. I have never been to Turkey or done this event before, so that should be pretty fun,” Selley told The Royal Gazette.
“I am excited and it's good to see how it is and the people there. It will just be a fun experience.
“I have been training a lot and feel pretty good about it. My scores have been good, so hopefully it will be a good outcome.
“I have been putting in a lot of training on the range and with exams season it has been a little tricky balancing stuff, but I think it will be all right.”
As well as earning vital world ranking points on offer, the 16-year-old has set her sights on achieving a new personal best at the competition to be held at Antalya Sports Centre from June 18 to 23.
“It will definitely be pretty tricky because, I might be one of the youngest competitors there. But my goal is to shoot a personal best hopefully and wherever it takes me, it takes me,” she added.
The promising athlete achieved a personal best and new national record score of 561 in the recurve female young adults division on her debut at the The Vegas Shoot in Las Vegas, Nevada, in February.
Selley, who departs for Turkey today, will have to make the necessary adjustments to the outdoor conditions taking aim at a 122 centimetre target from a distance of 70 metres.
“Obviously the distance is a factor but definitely the wind conditions can vary a lot and all sorts of stuff,” she said.
Selley will also have to contend with challenging conditions, with temperatures forecast to reach 100F.
“It's hot so I might melt a little bit and probably come back looking like a lobster,” she chuckled. “I will just have to keep drinking water, put on suntan lotion and hope for the best.”
Selley is not the only athlete flying Bermuda’s flag at the upcoming event as compatriots Cameron Pickering, Bernard Wade and Jaydon Roberts are also set to compete there in the men’s recurve competition.
“I am definitely looking forward to joining up with them,” she said.
The trio departed for Turkey earlier this week to take part in the final Olympic Games qualifier at the Antalya Sports Centre from June 14 to 17, where they hope to secure either an individual or team spot at the fast-approaching Games in Paris.
“It's pretty impressive and so nice to see them succeed,” Selley added. “They are pretty close and a good team, so I am really happy for them and they are going pretty far, which is very exciting.”
