Bailey’s Bay will have their backs against the wall in a “must-win” situation against league leaders St George’s at Wellington Oval tomorrow.

Having already suffered three defeats, the Premier Division 50 overs champions cannot afford any further setbacks if they are to successfully defend their crown, which Bay captain Terryn Fray is wary of heading into the crunch match.

“Basically a very important weekend for Bay, must-win game,” Fray told The Royal Gazette. “The club know where we are, the players know exactly where we stand and we know how important this weekend is for us.”

Fray insists the title is not beyond his team’s grasp despite having made a poor start to the season with three straight defeats.

“We think that it isn't lost as yet although we didn't win our first three,” he added. “We think if we get another big win here [against St George’s] and then capitalise next week we can be right back in the title race.

“We know where we are falling short, so it's not like we are scratching our heads as to why we are not getting better results.”

Bay secured their first win of the season against Willow Cuts on June 2.

“We are just looking to build on last match's performance and try and bat as well as we did,” he said. “If we can bat almost as good as we did against Willow Cuts, we can probably stretch St George's.

“Obviously a very good side and a lot of their players are in form. They have some really good talent, so we are looking forward to it and it's very important for us to keep the momentum going.”

St George’s, who are level on points with unbeaten St David’s but lead the league on net run-rate, have momentum heading into the match after victory in their previous two outings against Somerset and Willow Cuts.

Coach Clay Smith is bracing himself or what he predicts will be a tough encounter.

“Another big game against a very tough team, defending champions,” he said. “We have to be at our best, and I have no doubt that we will be.”

Tomorrow’s remaining top-flight matches will see Western Stars host Somerset at Sea Breeze Oval while Willow Cuts take on Cleveland at Somerset Cricket Club.

St David’s, the only unbeaten team in the Premier Division, have a bye.

Another intriguing match-up taking place tomorrow is the First Division 50 overs clash between promotion contenders PHC and Warwick at PHC Field, where both will attempt to get back to winning ways having suffered defeats by a rejuvenated Devonshire Rec outfit in their previous outings.

“Very big game this weekend against PHC,” Warwick coach Lorenzo Tucker said. “It should be a really good game.

“PHC kind of remind me of Warwick with their make-up. They have a lot of young players performing well with some veterans in there to steady the ship.

“This is our last game of the first half of the 50 overs, so it’s very important to finish the first half 5-1 to give us a springboard and some confidence going into the second half.”

Somerset Bridge host Flatts at White Hill Field while Southampton take on Devonshire Rec at Southampton Oval in tomorrow’s remaining second-tier matches.

Bermuda Under-19 have a bye.
