More than 130 students took to the stage this weekend as part of the Menuhin Foundation’s annual student concert.

The event, held on Sunday at the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts, featured young people from 22 public and private schools who had taken part in the foundation’s primary school programme.

They were joined at the sold-out concert by the Menuhin Foundation’s First Orchestra, Intermediate Orchestra, Youth Orchestra and the Vivace String Quartet.

Laura Davis, chair of the Menuhin Foundation, said: “The Menuhin Foundation has built up an enormous legacy since its inception in 1976.

“With 48 years of history, through the primary school programme we have touched the lives of thousands of students and supported the development of a diverse and vibrant artistic community in Bermuda.

“This programme lies at the heart of the Menuhin Foundation and is one way that the foundation delivers its vision of ensuring that all children in Bermuda have access to the unique social, emotional and intellectual benefits of learning to play a string instrument.”

Ms Davis thanked the various donors, including the Government, along with the educators and volunteers who helped to make the show a reality.

A spokesman for the musical charity said the programme offers students a taste of string music and encouraged interested youngsters to sign up.

“The Menuhin Foundation’s mission is to provide opportunities for learning, performance, and access to instruments regardless of background and resources, and bursaries for students who wish to continue their musical education are available to those meet the guidelines of financial need,” the spokesman said.

“The Menuhin Foundation provides individual lessons for anyone who would like to learn a stringed instrument of violin, viola or cello. They have students as young as four years old and some who are young at heart.”
