Man charged with assaulting children

A Sandys man has been accused of assaulting two children more than 40 years ago.

The 81-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was charged with six counts of indecently assaulting a boy and girl, as well as committing a sexual offence against the boy, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The offences were allegedly committed between 1977 and 1982, when the alleged victims were under the age of 14.

The man was not required to enter pleas during his court appearance because the case must be heard in the Supreme Court.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson adjourned the case to the August arraignment session and released the man on $10,000 bail with a like surety until that time.

Ms Anderson also ordered that he attend Hamilton Police Station once a week and not contact the alleged victims or any prosecution witnesses.
