Kim Botelho crowned Bermuda Amateur Ladies Stroke Play champion
Kim Botelho kept it together when I mattered most to capture a second Bermuda Amateur Ladies Stroke Play Championship title at Port Royal Golf Course on Sunday.
Botelho finished at 23-over, 236, to win the 54-hole event by a convincing ten shots over nearest rival, fellow senior Carine Brule.
“It was a good win and nice to be able to be out there playing again,“ an elated Botelho told The Royal Gazette.
“It is exciting just to be out there playing again because obviously I am getting older and not able to play as much. It's nice to get out there and compete and be competitive.”
The tournament was Botelho’s to lose after she led nearest rival, fellow senior Katrin Burnie, by five shots heading into the final round and her final round put more distance between herself and the chasing pack.
“I really just wanted to play my own game,” Botelho said.
“I didn't actually think about the lead I had or try to play anybody else's game. I just go out there and play the golf, and I figured if could beat the golf course I could win.
“I didn't beat the golf course, it beat me obviously playing it five over. But that was basically my mindset, just playing the golf course and I played pretty steady except for the second last hole.”
Frenchwoman Brule captured the senior title with a 33-over, 246, to cap a memorable tournament debut.
“I am very happy to get this achievement. It was a really, really great experience because I have freshly arrived on the island and that was a great tournament in which I participated,” she said.
“We had very nice weather and the rounds were very tricky. We were very tight from each other so we had to remain focused.”
Tracy Nash, Tracy Burgess and Morgan Lightbourne finished tied for third overall at 34-over, 247, with teenager Sienna Mosquera rounding off the top five another shot back.
