Malachi Jones and Luke Horan form monster 347-run partnership for Warwick

Malachi Jones and Luke Horan both struck centuries in a 347-run opening stand that laid the foundation for Warwick’s 111-run win over Southampton Rangers in the First Division 50 overs at Southampton Oval on Sunday.

Southampton must have regretted sending their opponents into bat as they piled up 355 for two, with experienced all-rounder Jones leading the way with 195 runs from 163 balls, which included 24 fours and six sixes.

Jones, who was dropped four times, seemed destined for a double century but fell short after being grabbed by Swayne Campbell on the boundary off the bowling of Donte Brangman.

Horan also feasted on the Southampton bowling and gave up no chances on his way to scoring 120, from 128 balls, including nine fours and three sixes before he was the first Warwick batter to be dismissed when Southampton captain Dalin Richardson finally made the breakthrough in the 48th over.

Brangman had figures of one for 44 and new-ball partner Richardson one for 70.

Southampton made a decent fist of their reply, reaching 250 before being dismissed with a handful of overs remaining.

Richardson led the way with 60, opening batter Randy Bean chipped in with 41 and middle-order batter Makai Jacobs 46, while Warwick conceded 57 extras, including 41 wides.

First change Jodi Maroni was the pick of Warwick’s bowling with four for 46 and received solid support from Jahcobi Butterfield (three for 58) and centurion Horan (two for 39).

“All in all it was a good team win and a good effort,” Warwick coach Lorenzo Tucker said.

“This win was very important and takes us to 6-1 in our bid for promotion.

“It was a really special day with 15-year-old Luke Horan getting his first century and putting on 345 for the first wicket.

“To get a century was a special moment and the whole team was behind him and really excited.

“Malachi getting to 195 was special and he was fortunate after being dropped four times but he took full advantage of it and was unlucky not to get 200.

“Big props to Malachi today. He finally came into some form after a horrible first half of the season, so it’s good for us to see that.”

Southampton coach Darren Burchall conceded his team’s bowling was not up to par.

“We just gave up too many runs,” he said.

“We won the toss, decided to bowl first and didn’t bowl well at all.”
