Motor festival gears up for show with two new awards
Two new awards will be presented at this year’s Scooter Mart Motor Fest — including one recognising exceptional creativity and craftsmanship.
The event on Front Street on Sunday will feature a display of custom bikes and cars, entertainment, powerboat racing, drag bikes, acrobats, remote-controlled cars and a charity ride-out to close the show.
It will include an auction of a classic BMW Z3, which was produced in November 1998, registered in January 1999 and has 26,000 miles on the clock.
David Cahill, the director of Bermuda Charge, a motorsports organisation that puts on Motor Fest, said the new awards — the Madhouse Motors Award and the People's Choice Award — would recognise the “exceptional creativity and craftsmanship within the island’s vibrant bike and auto community”.
He said the Madhouse Award would be presented by world-leading motorcycle builder and designer J Shia, the founder of the Boston-based business after which the award was named.
Mr Cahill explained that Ms Shia would look for the bike and car that represented the “most creative modification, celebrating innovation and eye-catching style”.
He added: “The winning creations, selected by Ms Shia in her role as guest judge, will embody the spirit of creativity and inspire custom enthusiasts across Bermuda.
“The grand prize for each winner will be return business class flights courtesy of BermudAir to one of their many destinations, allowing the winners to embark on a deluxe journey to further fuel their passion.”
According to Mr Cahill, the People's Choice Award will “empower bystanders to choose their favourite bikes and cars at the event, for the first time”.
He said: “Using a QR code and a clever technology solution provided by Socialprise, a Bermudian digital solutions agency, attendees can use their phone camera to cast votes electronically and reveal the most-loved car and bike.”
The winner will get a night’s stay at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, including breakfast for two.
Mr Cahill added: “We’re so grateful to Ms Shia for travelling to be our guest judge, and to Socialprise for their awesome support with the event technology, as well as BermudAir and Hamilton Princess for providing incredible prizes.”
Scooter Mart Motor Fest, which will run from noon to 6pm, is free for spectators. For more information go to www.bermudacharge.com.
