Motorists urged not to take chances on the road

The Bermuda Road Safety Council has urged the public to take care when behind the wheel to prevent potentially tragic consequences.

Dennis Lister III, the chairman of the council, said that for the month of July the body would adopt the slogan “Chance takers are accident makers”, calling on drivers to take caution.

“Every decision we make behind the wheel has consequences,” Mr Lister said. “Taking chances — whether it's speeding through a red light, texting while driving, or not buckling your helmet — might seem like a shortcut to saving time.

“However, these seemingly small gambles can have devastating results. A moment's distraction or a split-second decision to ignore safety rules can lead to accidents that alter lives for ever.”

Mr Lister added that the impact of road traffic collisions extends beyond the immediate victims to their families and loved ones, while the economic burden they cause can quickly add up.

He called on motorists to remain vigilant, respect speed limits, wear seatbelts and never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“Let’s commit to making our roads safer for everyone,” Mr Lister added. “By doing so, we honour those who have been affected by road accidents and build a stronger, more connected community.”
