Emma Harvey wins silver medal at Central American and Caribbean Games

Never in her wildest dreams did Emma Harvey envision competing on the Olympic stage alongside her brother, Jack.

But that is precisely what the pair will be doing in a few weeks’ time when they make their debut at the Games on July 26.

The siblings secured their spots in Paris after achieving the Bermuda Olympic Association’s qualifying standard and then securing universality spots.

“It’s so awesome to be going to Paris with Jack,” Emma, 22, told The Royal Gazette.

“It’s definitely like we’ve been on this journey for a long time, not just because we are siblings, but also through training, meets and competitions. It’s been really amazing and for both of us to be going is huge.

“A year ago, I just thought maybe one would get it and the other would be 100 per cent behind the one who was going, but I did not think that both of us would get the times and both of us would be on our way to Paris, so it’s been awesome.

“It’s also been really amazing in this last few weeks, especially in the last week since the team announcement has been made to just really enjoy this time together and really be at it together.

“Being a part of history as siblings to compete for Bermuda at the same Olympics is just so cool, and I know that we both just want to do Bermuda really proud.”

Jack, 21, is also looking forward to the Olympic experience with his sister by his side.

“I couldn’t be more excited to represent Bermuda,” he said.

“The Olympics is the pinnacle of swimming, so it means a lot to reach that level.

“Of course, it’s even better doing that with my sister. We’ve been there for each other our entire careers, so it’s cool knowing that we get to go together.

“Emma has definitely been a very important part of my career and I wouldn’t be where I am without her.”

The pair are scheduled to depart on July 14 for Paris, where they will ramp up their preparations during a training camp in the final build-up to the Games.

“We will be heading off to France and doing a training camp there together before going to the Olympic Village, so it’s going to be awesome,” Emma said.

“There’s so much going on, but it’s also exciting and it has just been awesome to be training with him in all this excitement together.

“It’s amazing comparing this to the World Championships or Commonwealth Games and you can just feel that it’s the pinnacle of our sport and so many others.

“It’s just unreal and truly like nothing else that I’ve ever prepared for and nothing else that I’ve been so lucky to be a part of.

“I am just trying to really soak it in and I am definitely getting those rings attached to my body after the Games.

“So many people have reached out and said being an Olympian is for life, and I just think that’s one of the coolest things regardless of whatever happens in the future of my career.

“This achievement will stay with me for life and something that will always make me proud, so I am just so excited and can’t wait to be in Paris.”

Jack added: “It’s my first Olympics, so I’m excited to experience what the Games are like in person as opposed to watching them on TV.”

The pair are determined to produce their best as they get set to compete against the world’s elite.

“My main goal is to go out there and make Bermuda proud and make myself proud,” Emma said.

“I know I am going to give it everything I have and if it’s enough to swim again in the finals that would be awesome.”

Echoing his sister’s sentiments, Jack added: “I just want to do the best I can possibly do and take in the experience of being at the Olympics, being in the Village, experiencing the atmosphere and racing the fastest swimmers in the world.”

Emma, a medal-winner at the Central American and Caribbean Games and multiple national record-holder, is thankful to have the opportunity to showcase her talents in the Olympics, which seemed in doubt after experiencing a bout of mononucleosis earlier this year.

“This year has definitely been a lot of ups and downs, performance-wise,” she said.

“If you were just looking on paper and stuff it may be the best season of my life, but there has certainly been some challenges.

“I had mono back in March, which was quite unfortunate timing because I had been coming off really great training, so I was really hoping to get my Olympic time around them.

“I was sidelined for a few months but I’m just really happy I was able to get back to full fitness and hit the Bermuda qualification time in late May.”
