Appreciation for working out the wrinkles

Lots of technical and physical work goes into road repaving

There are times that persons make negative comments based on rumours or speculation. Then, there are times that criticism is warranted. It is up to the individuals or organisations to accept where they must step up their game.

Apologies

With that being said, let me apologise to the people of Devonshire, Smith’s and other eastern parishes. Anyone who has travelled through South Road by the Collector’s Hill junction had been subjected to some challenging driving. There are loads of technical problems that contributed to this.

Yet the responsibility still lies with local MPs to see that these problems are addressed. Rightfully, many residents have called, sent text messages, pictures or e-mails to vent. It is actually good when MPs receive these messages, as it shows their constituents know they can reach out to their respective representatives.

Miles to go

Earlier in June, several teams from the Department of Works and Engineering began to address the situation at the Collector’s Hill junction.

First they removed the old asphalt on both Collector’s Hill and South Road between the petrol station and the restaurants. Then a liquid substance was put down to bond the new asphalt to the surface. Once the new asphalt was put down a seven-ton steamroller was used to squeeze out air and moisture.

It takes a few hours for the fresh asphalt to dry or cure.

No doubt, there are many other areas around the island that are in need of attention. Both the Government and W&E teams are fully aware of this. So, whenever you do see them, honk and tell them thanks, as they will be working hard in the heat.

For those who have time to stop, please take them some cold water. They are most deserving of it.
