Young Bermuda basketball teams primed for overseas competition

Some of Bermuda's brightest basketball talent will be taking on international competition in the Cayman Islands and Canada this month.

The Bermuda Basketball Association’s under-16 male team are set to compete at the Battle of the Beach Tournament in the Cayman Islands. The competition also features teams from Florida, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands and the host country and will take place from today until July 13.

The BBA under-16 team is comprised of Paul Ashton, Amir Brangman-Johnson, Ajani Carey, Quinton Husband, Blake Johnston, Maxwell Lawrence, Stasio Rayner-Weller, Ralph E Scott, Maximus Simons, Rajan Simons, Lachlan Thompson and Devin Todd. The squad will be accompanied by head coach Gladstone Simons, assistant coach Ralph Scott and team manager Nea Simons.

The BBA will also be represented by an under-18 team at the DBC Invitational hosted by DJ Sports Club in Montreal, Quebec, from July 16 to 22.

The BBA under-18s will come up against various club teams within the region and is comprised of Paul Ashton, Cameron Basden, Tristan Currelly, Anton Harris-Gilbert, Jacob Hines, Elmer Martinez, Zycori Powell-Nisbett, Jonah Simmons, Jordan Smith, Devin Todd and Szaine Williams. The local team will be accompanied in Montreal by head coach Tim Trott.

“The teams were selected from an available pool of 36 players currently in the BBA Junior National Programme and have been preparing for these tournaments since October," the BBA said in a statement.

"To facilitate and encourage the development of our athletes, all prospective players were required to play in the BYB League, the BBA official youth development partner, as well as play for their respective high school team in the BSSF this season.

"The BBA would like to thank the general public and sponsors for supporting these talented athletes."
