The Ministry of Health has named Shaun Ramroop the island’s new Chief Medical Officer.

Dr Ramroop, who has been acting in the post since last August, was described by the ministry as a “distinguished public health physician with more than 15 years of experience in health leadership and public health”.

The ministry said: “Dr Ramroop's career spans several administrative and managerial positions within the healthcare sector in Trinidad.

“His professional credentials also extend to the British Virgin Islands, where he was licensed to practise medicine and served as Senior Medical Officer before relocating to Bermuda.

“His professional interests include population health and the management of non-communicable diseases. Notably, Dr Ramroop played a pivotal role in the launch of the Hearts in the Americas initiative by the Pan American Health Organisation in both the British Virgin Islands and Bermuda.

“Since 2022, he has been employed in Bermuda as a Senior Medical Officer with the Department of Health.”

The ministry added that Dr Ramroop has demonstrated his leadership and expertise in the acting role, and has take on the substantive post effective July 1.

“His deep understanding of public health, medical practice and government administration, and his approachable demeanour, collaborative spirit and commitment to excellence has proven invaluable to the Ministry of Health,” the statement concluded.

His predecessor, Ayoola Oyinloye, served in the role for about three years, assuming the post in August 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was announced last August that Dr Oyinloye had stepped down for personal reasons.
