Oliver Betschart four shots off lead after first round of R&A Junior Open
Oliver Betschart got off to a good start at the R&A Junior Open in Scotland on Monday.
The Bermudian golfer carded a two-over 74 to earn a share of eleventh, four shots behind leader Aidan Lawson.
The 15-year-old was even par heading to the last hole but made double bogey after overshooting the green to finishon a frustrating note.
“I was a little bit frustrated with my shot into the green on 18 which came out of the rough hot and overshot the green, which unfortunately led to a double bogey, and that was really my only mistake,” siad Betschart, whose round included a birdie, an eagle, three bogeys and a double bogey.
“I felt I played solid. The course is tight with narrow fairways, so my focus was just on hitting fairways and greens in regulation, which sometimes didn’t work out.
“Still a lot of golf to play, so I just need to keep focused and take one shot at a time. It is such a great event and I have met a lot of people.”
Among those Betschart has had the pleasure of meeting is three-times major winner Padraig Harrington, who also won the 2012 PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Port Royal Golf Course after British Open champion Ernie Els withdrew.
“I met Padraig Harrington, two-times Open Championship winner, at the opening ceremony,” Betschart said.
“He remembered being in Bermuda and winning the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.”
Scotland native Lawson holds a one-shot advantage over the rest of the field after carding an opening round of 70, which included three birdies and a solitary bogey.
There are 116 players from 70 countries competing in the tournament, which is being held at the par-72 Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club located on the outskirts of Troon in Scotland.
