Oliver Betschart produces top-20 finish in R&A Junior Open
Oliver Betschart did Bermuda proud after finishing tied for fifteenth among some of the world’s best teenagers at the R&A Junior Open, which concluded in Scotland on Wednesday.
The promising golfer completed the 54-hole stroke-play tournament at 12-over 228 after starting the final round tied for fourteenth and signed off with a final round of six-over 78, which included two birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys.
“I am proud of my result and it’s great to see that even when I don’t play my best golf I can still perform and I am moving in the right direction with my game,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“It was a great experience playing on a Links course again and it really made me think about every single aspect of each shot that I played.”
Betschart carded a two-over 74 in the opening round and followed up with a four-over 76 in the second to comfortably make the 36-hole cut, with the top 45 players and ties advancing to the final round.
The 15-year-old, the youngest Bermudian to feature in a PGA Tour event and the reigning Gosling’s Moongate Tour Championship champion, finished tied for 59th on his tournament debut two years ago.
“Since I last played this event two years ago I have learnt so much and it is reassuring to see how the scores compare,” Betschart said.
The tournament is the latest is a productive month for Betschart, who finished an impressive fourth at last week’s Scottish Boys’ Under-16 Open Championship in Perth, where he shot under par in each of the three rounds.
He also impressed at the Bermuda Amateur Men’s Stroke Play Championship at Port Royal, where he finished runner-up after losing to Kenny Leseur on the second hole of an exciting play-off.
South Korea achieved a sweep at the R&A Junior Open with Seonghyeon An claiming the boy’s title by four shots and Hyosong Lee winning the girls competition by eight shots.
