QPR scout heads to island for Bermuda Triangle Cup
Excitement is building for the Bermuda Triangle Cup with a scout from English Championship side Queens Park Rangers confirmed to be attending the six-day tournament.
Three foreign teams, Charlotte, West Ham Academy and Seedorf Select, have confirmed their participation for the fifth edition of the tournament, which takes place from Tuesday to Sunday at the National Sports Centre and is hosted by Bermuda Sports International.
Dennis Brown, president of BSI, is pleased that Bermuda’s top young footballers will get the chance to display their ability to professional scouts.
“Our players will get the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of the professional academies and also a professional scout from Queens Park Rangers,’’ Brown said.
Seedorf Select, coached by Kwaku Ohemeng in Manchester, England, will compete in the same pool as West Ham United Academy, Bermuda’s under-20 national academy and a Bermuda select side.
Ohemeng was in Bermuda this year to conduct one-on-one sessions with the likes of the multi-talented Katherine Bean-Rosario, who is next week heading off to Monroe College in New York on a football scholarship. He also worked closely with Aaron Lugo, the national under-17 boys coach.
“When I came to Bermuda they told me about the Triangle Cup, I looked at the teams and I realised some of the players that I train are playing at a higher level than that,’’ Ohemeng said.
“Most of my boys play against West Ham United Academy, so it’s not a new thing to them.
“Initially we were going for some tournaments in Canada, but I was meant to be in Bermuda in August for training, so after the tournament I’m staying behind in Bermuda until August 6 to train some players on the island.
“I wanted to give my players a different experience of playing football and I love Bermuda, I call it my second home.
“I’m bringing 22 players but the younger ones, from Liverpool, Manchester United, Burnley, will play against the likes of FC Bascome under-14 and under-15 age groups.
“I’m more like a personal trainer and I train 200 boys a week and most of them are from Premier League up to academy level.
“Every summer, I group all the players I train to play matches against some of the top academies here and I train Bermuda senior players such as Kole Hall, Jai Bean, Ne-Jai Tucker.”
Charlotte, runners-up last year, are sending an under-15 side and are in the same group with Somerset Trojans as well as the national under-15 and under-17 academies.
“The tournament is intended to provide Bermudian players with exposure to international competition, right here in their own backyard,” Brown said.
“We’re really looking forward to the tournament with the three overseas teams, which add a professionalism and quality to the event.
“In addition to matches, other players and coaches will have an opportunity to benefit from the tournament.
“Football coaches not leading teams in the tournament can register for the “Coaching for Success” panel to be held on Saturday at the National Sports Centre Pavilion, led by Charlotte FC and West Ham coaches.
“This will be an opportunity to hear their unique perspectives on driving growth and unity within their teams. There is no fee for attendance of this discussion.
“On Thursday at 3pm, players not participating in the tournament can register for a skills clinic at North Field, led by Charlotte FC and West Ham United Academy coaches. The cost will be $25 per player payable in advance.
“BSI is still seeking sponsors to support this event and make it a success for all. Anyone interested in supporting the tournament can get in touch with us, and all sponsors will be recognised in our digital and in-person marketing.’’
