Concerns about prison conditions were raised by representatives of inmates at a meeting with the Treatment of Offenders Board.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, said: “We are fully aware of the challenges within our correctional system and are committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to find viable solutions.”

A government spokesman said that at Mr Weeks’s request, the TOOB had met the Westgate Inmate Committee last Wednesday.

He added: “The purpose of the meeting was to address concerns raised by the WIC on behalf of the general inmate population.

“The discussions were constructive and aimed at finding solutions to the issues highlighted by the inmates.

“Both parties acknowledged the importance of ensuring that the rights and wellbeing of prisoners are upheld while maintaining the security and order of the Westgate Correctional Facility.”

Mr Weeks added: "Open dialogue and transparency are crucial in this process and we are willing to discuss the issues raised by prisoners to ensure their concerns are adequately addressed.“

A government spokesman said: “Further meetings between the Treatment of Offenders Board and the Westgate Inmate Committee will be scheduled to continue addressing the matters raised.”

Information on the concerns raised by the WIC was not provided.
