Law student Max Blakeney is the recipient of this year’s coveted Appleby Legal Education Scholarship worth $30,000, the law firm announced today.

The award is annual, with the possibility for renewal for a second year, for a Bermudian law student who plans to return to the island to practice.

Mr Blakeney recently completed a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at University of Buckingham, in England, and will be starting a Master of Laws. He has spent the last four summers with Appleby as an intern learning from lawyers in various departments.

The Appleby/Berkeley Institute Scholarship, worth $20,000, was awarded to Tange Bean, completing a foundation programme at Lila* College before pursuing medical studies.

Her scholarship is annual, with the possibility for renewal for a second year, and is open to current graduating students of The Berkeley Institute.

Tiffany Cooper, Malcolm Hendrickson and Za’Khari Turner received Appleby’s Legal Education Bursaries, worth $15,000 each. They are given annually to university students who intend to return to Bermuda after graduation.

Ms Cooper recently completed a Bachelor of Laws at Cardiff University in Wales and will be commencing a Master of Laws. She was also a 2023 bursary recipient.

Mr Hendrickson is completing a critical criminology and law-plus programme (Honours) at Brock University in Canada, while Za’Khari is finishing a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at De Montfort University in England.

Scholarship and bursary recipients have the opportunity to apply for summer and winter internships at Appleby.

The law firm has been providing scholarships and bursaries since 1977 to qualified Bermudian applicants, based on academic performance, community involvement and extracurricular activities.

Brad Adderley, Bermuda managing partner, said Appleby was committed to supporting Bermudian students through the annual scholarships, bursaries and internships.

“Our internship programme was redesigned this year to provide even further training,” he said. “We also have our coveted trainee programme which has been instrumental in shaping the careers of many of Bermuda’s lawyers.”

He congratulated this year’s Appleby scholarship and bursary receivers on their academic achievements.

“We look forward to watching them fulfil their educational and professional aspirations,” he said.
