Arman Newton endures tough final round in Miami
Arman Newton found the going tough in the final round of the Optimist International Junior Championship in Miami, Florida on Thursday.
The Saltus student carded a ten-over 82 in blustery conditions at the Optimist Blue Monster course to finish 36th in the boys 14-15 division at 23-over 238.
“What a difference a day makes and I couldn’t catch a break out there today, fairways or greens,” Newton told The Royal Gazette.
“My goals this year were to shoot three rounds in the 70s and make the cut. I was really proud of making the cut tied 26th, but it was tough to finish with today’s final-round score.”
The 15-year-old got off to a disastrous start after carding successive bogeys on the first three holes.
A birdie at the 5th halted the slide but the relief proved short-lived as he played the remaining four holes on the front nine at five over after picking up a double bogey and three successive bogeys.
Newton fared much better on the back nine despite making four additional bogeys, two either side of the only other birdie he carded during the round.
The promising player got off to a poor start courtesy of an 11-over 81 on the same course in Tuesday’s opening round, but still managed to make the cut comfortably, thanks to an impressive three-over 75 at the shorter Optimist Golden Palm course the following day.
American Brayden DeStefano won the 54-hole tournament by five shots, with compatriot Crew Fitzgerald taking second and Canadian Oscar Ricketts third.
