Traffic disruptions are expected at a main roadway into Hamilton as work begins on core infrastructure.

The Corporation of Hamilton will upgrade the junction at Spurling Hill, including channelling electrical wires and improving traffic lights, altering the sidewalk and adding a new pedestrian crossing.

The work, scheduled to start on August 10, is expected to take six to seven weeks.

Patrick Cooper, a city engineer, said the work would affect a heavy traffic area but called the update “essential” as many replacement parts for the lights were now out of production.

Signs will direct traffic flow and a traffic management plan will be in effect.

Cavendish Car Park and nearby businesses will remain open, although the city has advised motorists to avoid the junction during peak hours.

Tenants around the area, including the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, have been alerted.

This project was scheduled to start in May but was pushed back partially because of problems getting the necessary materials.

Donald Dawkins, the project manger, said a degree of “project drift” could be expected on a job of such scope.

He added: “It made sense to delay the project by a few months to a time when traffic will be significantly lower and road congestion minimised.”
