Prayer event intended to inspire hope

A Hamilton Parish church is hosting a special prayer event tomorrow in an effort to inspire hope in the wake of recent tragedies.

The Right Reverend Lloyd Duncan, pastor of the Greater Smith’s Hill New Testament Church of God, said he was inspired to host the event, titled “There is Hope”, after seeing the pain in the community.

“With all that has transpired over the last few weeks, it has touched my heart and I feel that the community needs to be reassured that there is hope,” he said.

“We want people who may feel disillusioned by some of the events over the past two weeks or so.”

Bishop Duncan said that with the number of deaths that have rocked the island, many people had been thrust into grief and have to find a way to a “new normal”.

“We are all concerned,” he said. “I was saying to my congregation that while we were having service and rejoicing in the presence of the lord, unfortunately in our community there was a horrendous act that had taken place.

“Fear may not be the right word, but there’s a concern.

“I am in my sixties and if you had one murder a year in Bermuda, that would be cause for much alarm. Every other week it seems to be a proliferation of this sort of thing.”

“There is Hope” will be held at the Midland Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church on North Shore, Hamilton Parish, at 11am tomorrow.

A second event is scheduled to follow on Monday at 7.30pm.

Bishop Duncan added that the Greater Smith’s Hill congregation was also partnering with the Jamaican Association of Bermuda for a prayer event on August 4 at the same location.
