Onias Bascome scores 95 in St George’s final Cup Match trial
Wellington Oval (President’s XI won toss): Match drawn
St George’s captain Onias Bascome is heading into Cup Match in great form after hitting 95 for the President’s XI in the club’s final Cup Match trial on Saturday.
In an encounter delayed because of a wet Wellington Oval pitch, Bascome’s exploits after winning the toss and opting to bat saw the President’s XI recover from a top-order collapse to post 251 in 53 overs. At the end of play in fading light, the Vice-President’s XI were 166 for nine in 39 overs.
Coming into bat at No 8 after giving some of the Cup Match contenders a chance to bat, Bascome dispatched seven fours and the same number of sixes as he looked destined for a century, but fell five runs short of the milestone when he came down the track to a delivery from Delray Rawlins and was stumped by Marcus Scotland.
Allan Douglas Jr’s 45, a patient 31 from Kevon Fubler and Mackih McGowan’s 26 down the order were the other notable scores for the President’s XI.
“It’s always good to score runs especially before the big day,” Bascome told The Royal Gazette.
“It’s just something that I can look forward to taking into the Match. We’re looking to pick the best team that can go out there and take the cup away from Somerset.
“We had a slow start in this match, maybe due to the circumstances of the wicket. It then dried out a bit and we were able to go out there, with myself and others chipping away to put up a respectable score.”
Zeko Burgess struck in the first over to remove Nzari Paynter for one, before Azendé Furbert’s Cup Match fate was probably sealed when he departed for a four-ball duck. Burgess also accounted for Jarryd Richardson to leave the President’s XI reeling at ten for three.
Oronde Bascome, the last St George’s captain to win Cup Match in 2011, appeared to weather the storm until he played a rushed shot off a Rawlins delivery for Luke Horan to take the catch. The Bermuda captain was the pick of the Vice-President’s XI bowling attack with three wickets.
Jonté Smith fell three short of a half-century, with Q'Shai Darrell and Rawlins the other Vice-President’s XI batters with decent scores.
Fubler and Douglas did most of the damage with the ball for the President’s XI, with the two spinners picking up two wickets each.
The St George’s selectors converged hours after the match to choose the final team attempting to wrestle the trophy away from Somerset, who have been the holders since 2012.
Four players from last year’s Annual Classic have already been ruled out for the East Enders, with the injured Sinclair Smith and Charles Trott joined on the sidelines by Rodney Trott and Treadwell Gibbons Jr, who did not make themselves available for selection.
