Traffic disruption warning ahead of ‘major’ Scaur Hill works
A major project to boost safety and stability at Scaur Hill is to get under way at the end of September, the Government announced yesterday.
It is expected to take six months and motorists were advised that traffic restrictions will be in place.
The Government said that the “essential” project was needed to maintain safety and integrity in the area, and is to start on September 30 at Scaur Hill, Sandys.
It added: “The construction involves replacing an approximate 230ft length of retaining wall along the foreshore between Ledgelets Lane and Lantana Road.”
Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said: “The replacement of this retaining wall is crucial to ensure the safety and stability of Scaur Hill.
“We appreciate the public's patience and co-operation during this time.”
The Government added: “To ensure public safety, a temporary one-way traffic system will be implemented.
“Details of the proposed system will be communicated in due course.
“Special arrangements may be required for 40ft tractor-trailers and heavy loads.
“The ministry is focused on minimising disruption and ensuring the safety of all road users.
“As the project progresses, further updates will be provided.”
Colonel Burch told the House of Assembly in February that $1.37 million was estimated in the 2024-25 Budget for expenses related to dangerous walls and rock cuts.
He said then: “This cost centre is used to carry out repairs to legacy ill-constructed walls and rock cuts at risk of collapse.
“It has been increased to deal with the many walls that have been identified over this past year.”
The minister added: “I am prepared to exceed that budget if necessary for public safety.”
At the time, he believed Scaur Hill was next in line for repairs, but said that other locations included Scott’s Hill Road in Somerset, Middle Road in Devonshire, Blackwatch Pass and Cavendish Road in Pembroke.
