Temporary traffic changes for Spurling Hill works

Several traffic changes are planned for a section of Hamilton road to make way for extensive roadworks at Spurling Hill on the city’s eastern edge.

The Corporation of Hamilton said the changes were necessary to accommodate works starting this weekend.

They include the temporary closure of the car parking bays along the curb on the east side of Court Street, between Church Street and Reid Street.

That section of Court Street will be converted to a temporary bus stop.

A sign will be placed at the Church Street bus stop to inform passengers of its switch across to Court Street, the City said, with benches relocated for passengers.

The City said temporary “no parking” and “buses only” signs would be installed for the new arrangement.

The works will also affect bus route No 3, which typically travels via Cavendish Road.

“During the construction period, these buses will now travel via Palmetto Road, Frog Lane, Montpellier Road, and back on route on Middle Road, in both directions,” the City said.

Significant traffic-light upgrades are included in the works at Spurling Hill, which will involve extensive channelling for an electrical conduit, reconfiguration of sidewalks and the installation of a new pedestrian crossing.

The works are expected to be completed within five to six weeks and the City’s traffic management plan is geared to minimise congestion while the project is carried out.

In an earlier announcement, motorists were advised that Cavendish Car Park would remain operational throughout — but commuters were advised to avoid Spurling Hill if possible.
