Mental wellness walk to raise awareness and funds
Residents were invited to join a walk in October that is aimed at raising funds for a mental health charity’s communal housing programme.
The Steps to Mental Wellness 5km Walk, presented by the Bermuda Mental Health Foundation in partnership with CG Insurance and Zest Wellness, will start from the Botanical Gardens.
In its second year, the event will run from 8am to 1pm on October 6.
The BMHF said: “This pivotal event aims to elevate awareness and advocate for mental health in a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.”
It added that the goal of the walk was to raise $50,000 to support the charity’s communal housing programme.
The BMHF said: “Participants of all ages are invited to join the morning walk, which is designed not only as a physical activity but as a movement towards fostering a supportive community for mental wellness.”
James Macdonald, its chairman, added: “As you may be aware, BMHF has been supporting individuals with mental illness for almost 30 years through advocacy and the provision of housing.
“This event is crucial to our mission of highlighting the importance of mental health in Bermuda.”
He said: “We are dedicated to using community activities to enhance understanding and support for mental health issues.”
Naz Farrow, the chief executive of CG Insurance, added: “At CG, our commitment to overall health, including mental health, is deeply important to us.”
She said the event was a vital part of the company’s mission to foster a healthier community.
Ms Farrow added: “By coming together for this event, and kicking off World Mental Health Month, we are taking significant steps towards raising awareness and supporting mental wellness for all.”
The BMHF said that, to date, it has acquired four homes, which accommodate 25 people.
It hoped the funds raised through this year’s event will enable it to accommodate the same number again as part of its drive to provide housing for people affected by mental health issues.
The charity said: “Providing adequate housing for one of the island's most vulnerable populations has been a core part of BMHF’s mission.”
This year, an employer fundraising challenge, which is aimed at engaging local businesses in the charity’s cause, was added to the event.
The walk will start at Camden House and participants will proceed through the main path of the Botanical Gardens to Berry Hill Road.
It will take in Tee Street, Middle Road, Watlington Road and Brighton Hill Road before walkers reach South Road, where they will go around the gardens and return to the starting point.
Water stations and rest stops will be placed along the route, where participants can also pick up mental health educational materials.
The first 100 people to sign-up will receive a free T-shirt, supported by CG Insurance and Zest Wellness.
