Damien Matthews was Bermuda’s top bowler in the singles at the Pan American Bowling Championships in Reno, Nevada, on Tuesday.

Out of 101 competitors, Matthews finished in 62nd position, with a score of 1,205 for a 200 average. He was followed by Michael Honore, who rolled 1,194 for a 199 average to settle for 66th position.

Lamar Richardson and David Maycock were close to each other in 83rd and 84th, respectively.

A score of 1,054 for an average of 175 placed Anthony Hayward 90th, with Dayvon Tucker three places down on a score of 1,037.

Packy Hanrahan of the United States bagged the gold in singles to conclude the first day at the National Bowling Stadium. Hanrahan had a score of 1,473 for an average of 245.

Steven Riley, the Bermuda team manager, expressed his satisfaction with the way the players performed in the singles. Last night, the Bermudians were expected to embark on their doubles campaign. The competition is set to run until Saturday, when the medal ceremony will be held for the team event.

“I felt the overall singles performance was fair,’’ Riley told The Royal Gazette. “I was very impressed with Michael Honore who is making his international debut. Damien Matthews also executed some very good shots throughout the singles events.

“We are making a few equipment changes that will match-up with the lane pattern better for our doubles event so I'm expecting some good performances going forward.”
