“A population that does not take care of the elderly and of children and the young has no future because it abuses both its memory and its promise”— Pope Francis

The Progressive Labour Party believes that our seniors are the pillars of our community, the keepers of our history, and the source of wisdom for future generations — and that it is our moral obligation to ensure that they are cared for, protected and supported.

As a party, we are deeply committed to ensuring that those who have given so much to our island enjoy their golden years with the dignity, respect and quality of life they deserve.

Since assuming the mantle of government, the PLP has implemented policies and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of our seniors including:

1, Annual increases in seniors’ pensions

Since taking office, we have committed to and delivered on providing annual increases to pensions, with the next increase scheduled for September. This is in recognition of many seniors being on fixed incomes and struggling when prices are raised. Even a modest annual increase means a lot to those in need, and we are glad to be able to deliver this for them.

2, Enhanced healthcare access through FutureCare

Understanding the importance of healthcare in maintaining quality of life, the PLP prioritised the improvement of healthcare services for seniors. We expanded access to affordable healthcare by introducing FutureCare and, since taking office in 2017, have frozen premiums whenever possible, expanded the home health and seniors care benefit under FutureCare and HIP, and increased prescription benefits, allowing seniors to get more of the medications they need. Last but not least, we also have local radiation therapy coverage for HIP and FutureCare, driving down costs and giving every Bermudian an on-island option for the care they need.

3, Housing and nursing homes

To protect our seniors, we modernised the Residential Care Homes and Nursing Homes Act to provide for better standards in our care homes. We also launched an interest-free home improvement loan programme for up to $15,000 for families who need help modifying their home or that of their senior loved ones.

Looking forward, the PLP remains committed to building on the progress being made for our seniors. We will continue to advocate for policies that protect and empower our seniors, ensuring that they live with dignity, security and joy. Our vision is for a Bermuda where every elder is valued, every need is met and every golden year is truly golden.

The PLP believes that a society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members. Our seniors have earned the right to live their final years in peace and comfort, surrounded by a community that respects and honours them. As a party, we pledge to continue our efforts to safeguard their wellbeing, ensuring that they receive the care, respect and opportunities they deserve.
