A counselling group dedicated to bringing hope and healing to those confronting substance abuse has appealed to the public for help for its upcoming tag day.

Focus Counselling Services’ tag day will take place on September 6, and the group has called on on business managers, activists and the wider public to contribute and support programmes delivering treatment to adolescents and adults.

Leslie Grant, the executive director of Focus, said: “Every contribution, whether through volunteering or participating in a denim day, plays a crucial role in supporting those on their path to recovery.

“We are grateful for the community’s ongoing support and look forward to working together to change lives and strengthen our community.”

New board members announced

Focus Counselling Services has announced several new members of its board of directors.

Antoine Lightbourne is an attorney and barrister serving as the Assistant Tax Commissioner for stamp duty at the Officer of the Tax Commissioner.

He had been a volunteer for the Mirrors Programme for more than ten years and is a board member of the Mirrors Alumni and Friends Association.

Mr Lightbourne has recently been appointed president of Sandys Rotary Club and an elder and trustee at Grace Communion International in Devonshire.

Davina Cannonier, a financial assistance case officer with the Department of Financial Assistance, has also joined the board.

Ms Cannonier works part-time as a spa co-ordinator at Three Graces Day Spa.

She said: “I chose to be a part of Focus Counselling Services because I believe the charity provides life-changing support and protection that enables improved community health and wellbeing.

“Further, I firmly believe in redemption, second chances and transformations for all persons who genuinely seek to commit to gain or regain a quality of life.”

Theresa Bascome joined the board out of a “desire to help those in need”.

She works as a certified public accountant and has a passion for service.

Mark Jennings Jr will return as a member of the board.

He will bring more than 20 years of experience in raising capital, high-net-worth client advisory, portfolio management and trading.

Mr Jennings is the managing director of global capital introductions at Bite Investments New York.

He has previously held positions at Morgan Stanley, LOM Securities Bermuda, GSO Capital, JP Morgan’s Highbridge Capital Management and Alliance Bernstein.

The organisation said the tag day is essential to keep operations running.

It has appealed for ambassadors to help share tags and give details about counselling while securing donations.

The group encouraged others to host denim days at their workplaces, where employees can wear jeans for a $3 donation.

Focus said that those wishing to donate can also volunteer with a group of friends or colleagues for tag day as a team-building activity.

Those interested in volunteering, hosting a Denim Day or organising a group can contact Leslie Grant at info.focus@focus.bm or on 296-2196.
