Bermuda’s boys under-14 team returned to the island last night to rapturous applause from scores of well-wishers, which included the Premier and sports minister.

The team coached by Vashun Blanchette finished runner-up in the second tier of the Caribbean Football Union Boys Under-14 Challenge Series in Trinidad & Tobago after two weeks of dominant performances.

It ended in disappointment on Sunday with a penalty shoot-out defeat by Barbados after a goalless draw in regulation, but the team can be comforted by not only gaining promotion to Tier I but also in the individual accolades for Xavier Thomas-Bassett (best goalkeeper), Jeon Wolfe (leading scorer) and Carter Thomas (final MVP).

BFA president Mark Wade said: “Reflecting on the remarkable accomplishments of these young players, it’s evident that Bermuda’s football future is full of promise. These boys have displayed not only their skills but also an admirable courage and resilience that lifts us all.

“Their journey exemplifies the incredible outcomes when talent is paired with determination. While we recognise there’s more work ahead, we take this moment to celebrate their achievement. We are deeply proud of them, their committed coaches, and the families who have supported them at every turn.”

Sports minister Owen Darrell added: “We couldn't be prouder of our under-14 national team. Their performance in this tournament has truly been inspiring. These young athletes have demonstrated what can be achieved through hard work, dedication and a true love for the game. It’s essential for us as both a community and a government to stand behind our youth, celebrating not just their victories but also their challenges.

“Their journey throughout this tournament has brought us together, showcasing the unifying power of sport on our island.”

Tier I was won by Jamaica, who beat French Guinea 7-1 in the final.
