A man who assaulted a police officer is to be sentenced in October.

Justin Mateo, 33, admitted assaulting, threatening and violently resisting the officer, as well as riding a bike without due care and attention, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that officers stopped Mateo after he overtook them on North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish on November 14.

Mateo, from St George’s, had warrants for unrelated matters when he was stopped and pulled away from the officer while being handcuffed.

He called the officer, who lost his balance while trying to restrain him, “the worst f*****g cop I’ve ever seen”.

Other officers called to the scene constrained Mateo and took him to Hamilton Police Station.

Victoria Greening, Mateo’s lawyer, told magistrate Maria Sofianos that her client’s mental health report, which was ordered when he appeared in court months ago, “contains sensitive mitigation” relating to the incident.

Ms Sofianos ordered that a social inquiry report be written for Mateo and extended his bail until October 24, when he will be sentenced.
