Karen Grissette, a former US Consul-General in Bermuda, left the position last month, the consulate office has confirmed.

A spokeswoman said Ms Grissette, who was appointed to the postin July 2021, has moved on to her next foreign assignment as scheduled and Marielle Martin, the senior general services officer for the US Embassy in London, is acting in the role.

Ms Grissette, a native of California, earned a Master of Public Policy degree from Princeton University and has more than 20 years of experience in foreign service.

She worked in countries such as Jamaica, Tanzania and Bosnia and Herzegovina and served as the Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in Washington DC before she arrived in Bermuda.

Educational opportunities for Bermudians in the US grew during Ms Grisette’s time as Consul-General, when Bermuda College signed an agreementwith Troy University in Alabama and expanded its partnership with Flagler College in Florida, and the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts offered a course on the island for the first time.

Ms Grissette said in June: “There is no question that Bermuda has institutions, whether it be Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences, the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo or insurance companies, that are open to engage with American college students.

“The future looks very promising for deepening and broadening those connections.”

No updates were provided on the permanent appointment of the next US Consul-General.
