Kenny Leseur will have to wait at least another year to attempt to qualify for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

The top amateur misses out as he will instead be playing for Butler University in Michigan when the qualifier takes place at Port Royal Golf Course on September 11 and 12.

“Obviously I’m disappointed not to be coming back because my game is in such good shape,” Leseur told The Royal Gazette.

“But I need to play for my team and that is the No 1thing right now for me. Hopefully next year I will be able to play.”

Leseur became the youngest local player to play in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship as well as the youngest player to play on the PGA Tour since 2014 when he qualified for the inaugural event in 2019 at the age of 15.

He has been in sparkling form this year with two victories on the Gosling’s Moongate Tour and success in the Bermuda Amateur Men’s Stroke Play Championship.

Professional Scott Roy and amateurs Eric West and Oliver Betschart emerged as the three qualifiers for the PGA Tour event last year and Roy hopes lightning will strike twice when he tees off in the upcoming qualifier.

“I am excited to have another opportunity for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship,” he said.

“I feel good about my game. The last couple of practice rounds I’ve played I been playing really well and hitting the ball like I remember last year.

“Me and my coach/caddie Seth DeRoulet are putting a lot of time in very quickly over the next couple of weeks to get ready.

“I feel good, comfortable and confident, but also there’s a lot of young players out there that are hungry and have been playing a lot and playing really well. So hopefully my focus can get me across the line and I can play in the main event again this.”

Among the younger players Roy will face is Betschart, who last year replaced Leseur as the youngest player to play on the PGA Tour since 2014.

Betschart is also keen to make a second straight appearance in the PGA Tour event but admits the late announcement of the revised format caught him off guard.

“Initially I was a bit surprised by the short notice of the decision,” the 2023 Moongate Tour Championship winner said.

“But the number of rounds doesn’t affect me and my goals remain the same.”
