Work is needed to repair corroded beams and damaged concrete at a Pembroke bridge, according to a request for quotation.

The RFQ, published on the Government’s procurement website, said the Ministry of Public Works was seeking a contractor to carry out repairs to the The Glebe Road Bridge, which passes over Palmetto Road.

Documents included in the notice said the work would include cleaning the steel preflex beams to remove corrosion and repainting them with a protective coating.

The contractor would also be required to replace bridge bearings and carry out localised concrete repairs across the full span of the bridge.

A report by IEPC Engineering Services said that the original protective coating on steel beams in the bridge had failed, causing the beams to corrode.

“Although the corrosion did not appear to be severe, it is unclear how much of the original steel section remains intact,” the report said.

“There are localised areas where holes have been drilled through the web. In some of these locations, the section of steel to the perimeter of the hole has severely corroded.

“The risk is that as the severity of the corrosion worsens, the holes could potentially merge, to form one larger hole.”

The report recommended that the beams should be cleaned of all corrosion and a new protective paint system should be applied.

It noted that there was “significant corrosion of the bearings and localised degradation of the concrete plinths on which the bearings sit”, with a suggestion that the complete replacement of the bearings be considered.

The procurement documents also said that several of the base plates for the aluminium guard rails along The Glebe Road had either rusted or were missing anchor bolts, which the contractor would be required to replace.

The project would include jet power washing the stairs linking Palmetto Road and The Glebe Road, and the installation of new stainless steel hand rails.

While scaffolding will be required to carry out the repairs, the documents said that a minimum of one lane of traffic must be allowed on Palmetto Road at all times.

The documents stated that the temporary closure of The Glebe Road would be required, but to minimise disruption, night-time work would be needed.

“Out of hours allowance within submitted quotations should be included accordingly,” the documents state.

“The contractor shall give the Ministry of Public Works three weeks notice of required lane closures, to allow adequate time to publish a road traffic notice.”

The deadline for submissions was listed as 3pm on September 19, with a non-mandatory site visit scheduled to take place today.
