A family-friendly event in memory of murder victims this year is to take place on September 21.

The event, Live in Peace, will begin with a walk starting from 6pm at the Victor Scott Primary School playground, which will make its way to Roberts Avenue and end at Parson’s Road playground in Pembroke.

Desmond Crockwell, of Youthvision Promotions, said all residents were invited to attend the “important and necessary” event to support people in grief.

Mr Crockwell, an antiviolence campaigner, said: “As a small country who has been rocked by the spiralling, uncontrolled shootings and murders, it is imperative that we show love to those who mourn.

“This is a cry to parents who have the privilege of hugging their children. Let's come together and hug those who mourn. They need to know that Bermuda cares.

“This is a cry to political leaders, business leaders, spiritual leaders and community leaders. Let's put the jealousy, envy, backstabbing and pride aside.

“Our youth need to see us unite, for today's followers are tomorrow's leaders. This is not a 'their' problem, this is an 'our' problem.

“This is a cry to the gunman. Please, put down your tools and bring your little brother, sister, niece, nephew and cousin. Allow them to enjoy themselves.

“Take time to think about them. They deserve a peaceful childhood.

“This is a cry to you who is reading this. Bermuda needs us to unite. This affects us all, one way or another.

“How many believe that children’s lives matter?

“Let's show those children's families that they matter.”

There will be performances by gombey dancers, and the celebration will continue at Parson’s Road playground until about 8.30pm.

Mr Crockwell added: “At the end of the celebration, there will be various speakers, from parents who have lost loved ones to people who understand what life on the streets is all about.”

The island has been rocked by a series of violent crimes in recent months including a double murder near Fort Scaur in Somerset and the tragic deaths of four family members, including two children, at a house on South Terrace, Pembroke. A mother of five was also shot dead at the same complex and a young man was fatally stabbed at Horseshoe Bay on Bermuda Day.
