Ministry extends list of closed jobs categories

Work permit

The Ministry of Economy and Labour has extended a moratorium on new work permits covering a range of job categories for another three months.

The moratorium on 46 closed categories and ten restricted categories was set to end on August 31, but has been extended until November 30.

“General mason” was removed from the list.

A government spokesman said the decision was made to meet the industry demand.

The application process for restricted jobs is the same as that for the open category, except that the employer must apply for a maximum term of one year and submit evidence that candidates recommended by the Department of Workforce Development were appropriately considered.

The spokesman said the partner of a Bermudian, Permanent Resident Certificate holder, non-Bermudian on a work permit, or other legal residents of Bermuda who have already received permission to reside, may apply to seek employment.

In addition, partners who do not have permission to reside may apply to reside and seek employment.

Further details on Partner-Genuine and Subsisting Relationships are available online at gov.bm.

The spokesman said the ministry’s aim was to create job opportunities for Bermudians.

He added: “As the employment landscape in Bermuda continues to shift, policy amendments will reflect the changes in demand.”

Individuals who wish to increase their skill sets and employability are encouraged to register with the DWD by sending an e-mail to dwd@gov.bm.

They can also explore more options for further education through Bermuda College at www.college.bm.
