Motorists and pedestrians were warned to use extra care on the island’s roads with the return of pupils to school.

The Bermuda Road Safety Council urged drivers to obey speed limits and be cautious in school zones, especially during drop-off and pick-up times.

A statement said: “It’s crucial to adhere to these limits and be vigilant for crossing guards, who are there to ensure safe passage for students.

“Remember, distractions like texting or checking your phone can have dire consequences in these busy areas.”

The BRSC also reminded pupils to use crosswalks, obey traffic signals and stay on pavements where possible when walking to school and to wear helmets and follow the rules of the road if riding a bike.

Its statement added: “It's also important for parents to talk with their children about avoiding distractions, such as using phones or headphones while navigating our busy roads.”

The council encouraged drivers to wait a few extra seconds if they are behind a school bus and not to overtake the vehicle while children are boarding or disembarking.

Its statement explained: “Whether you’re a parent in the drop-off line, a driver passing through a school zone or a pedestrian near a school, taking a few extra moments to prioritise safety over speed can prevent accidents and ensure that all students get to and from school safely.

“In conclusion, road safety during the back-to-school season is a shared responsibility. By staying alert, following traffic laws, and teaching our children how to navigate the roads safely, we can create a safer environment for everyone.

“Let’s all do our part to ensure that every child arrives at school and returns home safely.”
