Musical version of The Tempest to be staged next month

A new company will present a musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest next month.

A spokeswoman for Cambridge Beaches resort said the production, presented by Devil’s Isle Shakespeare Company, will be staged near Somerset Long Bay on October 1.

This version of The Tempest, created by Devil’s Isle founder Séamus Miller and composer Emily Erickson, features about half of Shakespeare’s original text and ten new musical numbers.

The spokeswoman added: “This special outdoor performance also serves as the official kick-off for art month, a month-long celebration of the arts across Bermuda.

The Tempest is the perfect opening act, blending theatre, music and the island’s history for a cultural experience that will inspire and entertain audiences of all ages.”

Mr Miller said: “Our version of The Tempest is designed to be fun and entertaining for everyone, from Shakespeare enthusiasts to those seeing it for the first time.

“And with every Bermudian aged 18 and younger able to attend our shows for free, we hope to inspire the next generation of theatre lovers.”

Clarence Hofheins, general manager of Cambridge Beaches, said: “We are thrilled to host such a unique and captivating performance at Cambridge Beaches, especially as the opening event of art month.

The Tempest ties together Bermuda’s rich history with an unforgettable evening of Shakespeare under the stars, creating an experience that both our local community and guests will cherish.

“This event reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering the arts and providing extraordinary experiences for our guests, and we’re excited to be a part of this special cultural celebration.”

No outside food and drink will be allowed at the event, which will run from 7.30pm to 8.55pm, but a cash bar will be available.

General admission tickets are $10 for adults and free for patrons 18 aged and younger with proof of age.

VIP tickets, which include dinner at the resort’s Breezes restaurant at 5.30pm and exclusive seating for the show, are $75 for adults, plus 17 per cent, and 50 per cent off for children aged between 5 and 11.

Guests should bring their own blankets for seating during the performance.
