World Cup winner to play in Rugby Classic this year
Some former World Cup stars will be playing at this year’s World Rugby Classic.
Ruan Pienaar, who played 88 tests for South Africa at scrum-half and fly-half and was part of the winning World Cup team in 2007, will be appearing alongside compatriots Morne Steyn and Willem Alberts, members of the Springbok World Cup squads in 2011 and 2015 respectively.
Those international greats will form part of South Africa’s team at the tournament in Bermuda, which takes place from November 2 to November 8 and will also feature squads from Argentina, Canada, Classic Lions, France, Ireland, Italy and the USA.
The Bald Eagles, the oldest club side in the world, will also be on island to play a couple of matches against Old Boys Bermuda.
Among the stars expected to show the Bermuda public that they have still got it is Scottish legend Sean Lamont, who played 105 times for his country from 2004 to 2017, scoring 70 points from the wing.
Simon Zebo, who recently announced his retirement from professional rugby after playing 35 times for Ireland, will be one of the younger players involved. If you blink you might just miss him scorching up the wing.
Also in the Ireland squad are forwards Devin Toner, Mike Ross and Jack McGrath, who have a combined 187 appearances for their country.
There are likely to be legends everywhere you look at the National Sports Centre in November and an icon of the sport in South America, Juan Manuel Leguizamon, will also be lacing up his boots.
Leguizamon played 87 times for Argentina, captaining them on three occasions, and played in four consecutive World Cups from 2007 to 2019.
Stephane Glass is one of the big names in the France team after playing 37 times for his country, while Quentin Geldenhuys, capped 67 times by Italy at lock, will also be taking to the pitch.
